
Eradicating poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. While the number of people living in extreme poverty dropped by more than half between 1990 and 2015, too many are still struggling for the most basic human needs.
In the US, one of the biggest drivers for financial disaster is catastrophic medical bills. Here at the Center, we would love to tackle the challenge of preventing medical bankruptcy. Getting Sick ≠ Going Broke
The facts:
The number one cause of bankruptcies in the U.S. is medical expenses. Most people who declare bankruptcy for medical expenses have health insurance through their employers.
The problem:
Sick people often find themselves unable to pay the high cost of their health care and then have to find alternate ways to raise money, including crowdfunding. Of the $5 billion GoFundMe says it has raised, about a third has been for medical expenses from more than 250,000 medical campaigns it facilitates each year.
